WHO AM I?

Hey there!
Thanks for checking out my online gallery!
My name is Jai and I'm a 19-year-old fine art photographer based in Houston, Texas. I have traveled with my family ever since I can remember. So far, I have visited 48 out of 50 states in the Houston (still hoping to visit Alaska and Hawaii). I'm proud to have visited 42 National Parks in the U.S.

WHY DO I LOVE LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY?

I absolutely enjoy landscape photography--so much that I have dedicated several years to practicing the craft. I'm still getting better and hope to one day travel the world. I know it's a long ways ahead of me, but I hope to become a photographer and travel the world full-time. Someday. My story started when I was around 14 or 15. My father gave me his old camera, a decent Canon EOS 5D Mark III. I recall how difficult it was to use the camera, so I decided to borrow books about photography from the library. I studied hard and learned all the different camera settings. After becoming familiar with how to use my camera at its full potential, I switched my focus to YouTube.

HOW DID I LEARN THE CRAFT?

I cannot stress how immensely helpful YouTube has been. I learned basically 90% of my current photography skills from YouTube alone! Yup, you heard me right! I'm fully self-taught. No mentors. I simply learned how to learn by myself. That surprises most people.

WHO HAS INSPIRED ME?

The learning process doesn't happen in a vacuum. You need inspiration. That's why I study the works of photographers I admire.
Well then, how did I get myself into landscape photography, out of all genres, you may ask? It's quite unbelievable, but if not for a particular landscape photographer, I likely would not have seriously considered landscape photography. Washington based photographer, Nick Page sparked my interest in landscape photography. After stumbling across one of his YouTube videos, I was hooked. I really recommend checking out his amazing work :). Several others have inspired me as well, like Ansel Adams. His work is well known because he pioneered fine-art landscapes. Landscape photography would be quite different without him, in my opinion.  I've also taken inspiration from painters such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran. Their ideas about capturing the feeling and mood of landscapes have shaped my work today. And finally, nature itself is an inspiration. Just being out there is so calming--away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

HOW DO I TRAVEL?

Currently I travel with my family--mom, dad, and my little brother. All cooped up in a minivan, we hit the road as often as every month, off to somewhere wild. We visit National Parks, major U.S. cities, and all sorts of places out of the ordinary. We especially love visiting remote locations off the beaten path. Photography is so much fun when you do it with a whole family. Yes, we each have our own cameras, lenses and tripods. People may look at us wondering what kind of workshop is going on. Haha. Every road trip is like a family workshop.

WHERE WILL YOU FIND ME?

You may find me along the Oregon Coast, Eastern Sierras, Death Valley, Utah Badlands, any National Park, nature trail, scenic corridor, mountain peak, slot canyon, campsite, dark sky park, and anywhere in-between. If you happen to bump into me somewhere, I'd definitely like to connect and share the adventure with you!
